Abstract
“Make it intuitive” is the mantra of every start-up, software company, and new technology. But intuitive means different things to different people – so how do you ensure your designs are intuitive for the right people? In large part, it comes down to the effective use of UI patterns – recurring solutions that solve common design problems.
UI patterns are everywhere, and new ones are being defined all the time. Hundreds of websites now exist to document popular UI patterns of all kinds – web, mobile, responsive, you name it. What’s more, sometimes you’ll need different patterns to solve the same problem, depending on the user’s context. To achieve an intuitive UI and meet your users’ expectations, your first challenge is to identify which patterns will work best for the users, and the situation, that you’re designing for.
This presentation will walk through the process of evaluating design patterns; as part of this, we’ll dig deeply into several common and emerging UI patterns, focusing on how and when to use them to deliver a great user experience. But of course, UI/UX design is not just about following rules – sometimes you have to break them. We’ll also discuss when to break away from common patterns, and how to keep the experience intuitive when you do so.
Bio
Jim O’Neill is the Creative Director at Above the Fold, a UX design agency in Cambridge, MA, where he leads the visual design and front-end development of web and mobile apps for many diverse clients, including TomTom, Fidelity and Oliver Wyman.
Jim has 10 years of experience as a UI/UX designer, exploring the intersection of visual aesthetics, psychology and code. He spends most of his time wrangling complex B2B applications, and managing a team of awesome designers who make the wrangling part much more fun. Otherwise, he can usually be found playing ultimate frisbee or listening to podcasts about science.
